What Do You Need to Know to Choose the Right Aquarium?
An aquarium is a “piece of the underwater world” that will calm the nerves, saturate the eyes, give positive emotions and enrich with new knowledge. Anyone who falls in love with aquariums will find a hobby forever! But before you set sail on unknown worlds, you need to choose a reliable one. We will tell you how to do this in our comprehensive article.
Main shapes of aquariums
Square or cubic ones look spectacular, but are difficult to decorate, unlike rectangular ones. In cubic aquariums, it is difficult to correctly balanced and distributes algae. Separately, nanocubes are isolated – in containers up to 30 litres.
Round ones are usually used by beginner aquarists. Such aquariums are attractive due to their rounded shape, but not very practical. It is difficult to pick up equipment, decorations, and algae for them. Fish in “round logs” look unnatural due to optical distortion.
Panoramic are made specifically to conveniently observe domestic fish. The front glass in such designs has a curved shape, due to which the viewing angle increases, but the appearance of pets is slightly distorted;
Rectangular – a universal option that suits both beginners and professionals. In such an aquarium, the fish feel comfortable. It is easy to care for him, including “siphoning” the soil. In addition to the classical model, where the width and height are equal, and the length is 2 times the width, there are rectangular shapes “trough” and “screen”. The first is wide and low, the second is deep and narrow.
Trapezoidal are panoramic aquariums but without expensive curved glass. Visibility is achieved through additional side windows. In them, unlike panoramic ones, visual distortions are higher.
Corner ones take up little space due to the fact that they can be placed in the corner of the room. At their core, these are shortened rectangular aquariums, so it is convenient to attach equipment to them and it is easy to find “gadgets”.
What filters to use?
To maintain the normal functioning of the aquarium, it is necessary to ensure continuous water filtration. The growth, reproduction, and health of fish depend on their quality. Plants serve as natural filters and oxygen enriches but due to a closed and overloaded ecosystem, their efforts are not enough, therefore, they use a complex system of purification filters.
The most high-quality filter models have 3 degrees of purification, namely:
Mechanical – such cleaning occurs due to sponges that can hold particles larger than 0.1 mm. At this stage, litter and waste products of fish are sifted out.
Biological – it is provided by “useful” nitrifying bacteria that form on the filter. For such cleaning, a layer of ceramic rings is placed in the filter. A biofilm of bacteria forms on it or a sponge, which prevents the water from clouding.
A chemical is a finer degree of water purification using chemicals. As a rule, activated carbon is used in filters. It adsorbs (absorbs) harmful chemicals present in the water.
To achieve the correct operation of the filter, not only high-quality fillers are needed, but also time for the formation of a biological film with nitrifying bacteria.
