The Peculiarities of Dementia Awareness. What Do You Need to Know?
Dementia is a worldwide problem, the urgency of which increases with increasing life expectancy. Dementia is not only a deterioration and loss of memory but also more noticeable symptoms of brain damage. In Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, a person’s personality is literally erased, and behavioral norms and motor activity are violated. There is no cure for dementia but it is possible to slow its progression. Especially if you start acting in the early stages.
Right words are not possible to find
The very feeling that you know the word, literally “spins” in the language, but is not remembered. And such situations occur, further, more often.
Forgetfulness
The forgetfulness of the most familiar things speaks of incipient cognitive impairment: what was yesterday for breakfast, what was the conversation with a friend about, where is the phone, and others.
Increased anxiety
It’s not just about pessimism, doubts, and distrust – for people of age, this can be the norm. You should not expect unreasonable optimism and cheerfulness of youth from them, but when a person becomes maniacally suspicious, looks for a catch in everything, worries about nothing and cannot stop worrying about trifles – the question may not be just a change of character or difficult life circumstances. Especially if such changes happen quickly and groundlessly.
Mood swings
Depression and apathy (especially without obvious reasons) were noted by many patients with dementia in the early stages of the disease. The reason is a violation of the production of a number of hormones, which, among other things, regulate mood. Such depression is not corrected by an evening of watching a good movie, or meeting with friends and family, and is difficult to explain logically.
Character changes
A person experiences inexplicable changes in character, temperament, habits and tastes, and manner of communication. A person who is always cheerful and friendly can become grouchy and withdrawn, a tidy person can suddenly change into a person who is surrounded by the disorder. Loss of interest in once-loved activities and hobbies (knitting, reading, drawing) can also alert. Everything that has been done for years suddenly ceases to bring pleasure. And nothing appears in return.
Loss of goals
One of the early signs of changes in the work of the brain may be behavioral difficulties, lack of motivation, goals, and planning. Work and all classes turn into a constant repetition of the same lesson, questions, and imitations of activities instead of real actions.
What is the action plan for dementia?
Have you or loved ones noticed one or more of the signs listed above? Analyze and try to remember all such situations, and write them down. Further, the help of a neurologist is needed, which will help to understand the reasons. It may not be a matter of dementia – similarly, disturbances in the brain may appear due to disturbances in the hormonal background or metabolism, circulatory disorders, and tumors.
