Why It’s Essential to Have Proper Fog Light Bulbs?

Any car enthusiast who has some driving or owning experience knows what fog lights are. So, in this article, you will find out if a car needs fog lights and how to buy quality ones. Keep reading to discover valuable information.

Main types of fog lights

There are several categories into which fog lights are subdivided. The first division is low beam headlights. The dipped beam headlights have corrugated glass, their light beam is from 40 to 80 meters. This distance depends on the size of the headlamp, or rather on the size of the reflector – the larger the headlamp, the longer the beam. The high-beam headlights have smooth glass, the beam of light is respectively 100-400 meters.

Based on design considerations, fog lights can be divided into three types.

Headlights with a parabolic reflector (reflector). These are the classic headlights that every driver is familiar with as they are the most common so far. The shape of such headlights can be rectangular, round, oval.

Headlights with free reflector. The so-called multifocal reflector consists of many particles, each of which illuminates a specific area in front of it. As an example, we can recall the Peugeot 406 facelift, it has just such headlights. Such optics are more complex, more expensive, and much more efficient. The reflector allows you to form a fairly clear and bright light beam, respectively, the perception of the road under such lighting is much better.

Lensed or point headlights, their light beam is collected by a special lens, so it is bright and clear enough.

The colour matters

Now let’s look at another important aspect, namely the colour of the fog lights, which can be not only white but also yellow. So, what’s the difference?

Traditionally, it is considered that the desired part of the spectrum is absorbed in bad weather much worse and the perception of the road and the environment against the background of yellow light is much better. Also, let’s not forget that yellow light gives the best contrast to the environment. Therefore, the human eye perceives better under these conditions. Some experts believe that in fog lights, the main thing is not the colour, but the distribution of the light flux. They give a scattered horizontal beam, which also illuminates the road on the sides. The beam spreads between the fog and the roadway and thus does not create a translucent blanket that impairs visibility. In particular, do not forget about fog lighting during normal weather conditions, when there is neither rain nor fog. It will be useful, for example, at night when driving in unfamiliar places. It is not for nothing that some drivers consider fog lights as additional headlights in the car.

So, we do not advise you to be skeptical about fog lighting. Since there are many drivers who believe that standard headlights are sufficient to illuminate the road in rain, snow, or fog. Before making such conclusions, remember about the lighting of our highways, and this is not to mention the quality of their coverage.

In general, be careful while driving in foggy weather, the proper light is essential. If you’re looking to change or add fog light bulbs into your car visit the Euro Car Parts website.
