What to Choose Between Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3?

What to Choose Between Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3?

In 2021, Samsung released two foldable smartphones at once: Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. One turns into a mini-tablet, and the other unfolds like everyone’s favourite “clamshell”. We’re going to see in detail both Samsung foldable flagships and decide which is a success and which still needs some work.

The design

Galaxy Z Fold 3. The phone folds like a book, and when unfolded it is slightly smaller than standard tablets. The smartphone has received an IPX8 protection rating. This means it can be submerged in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes.

The body of the phone is made of aluminium, reinforced with additional metals and Gorilla Glass. Glass protects your phone from scratches and drops. The smartphone weighs 269 grams and is available in two colours – black and dark green.

It has a standard arrangement of buttons: on the right side – the volume and power on with a fingerprint scanner. On the back, there is a triple camera and a flash on a slightly protruding plate.

The speakers are located at the bottom and top left, while the microphone and charging port are on the right. The phone does not close tightly, there is a space at the very fold of the screen, into which dust can get. The rest of the assembly is very high quality, the smartphone is easy to fold and unfold.

Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Flip smartphone has an unusual design. The assembly of the smartphone is absolutely identical to the Fold model: the body is made of the same material using a special Samsung technology. Instead of two colours, you can choose from seven.

The phone is square in shape. It looks and feels quite small and weighs 183 grams – almost one and a half times less than the Z Fold. On the front panel, there are two cameras and a mini display, under which there is a flash.

When folded, the smartphone resembles the foldable phones of the early 2000s, as it was intended. True, like the Fold, it does not fold completely, leaving space at the fold. Therefore, Flip’s defence rating is the same. When unfolded, the phone looks like a regular phablet.

The screen

Samsung uses the same advanced technology for both phones. The screen is covered with PET-film, which increases its endurance by 80% compared to the first version. The first bendable displays weren’t long-lasting, so the company went into an upgrade. The screens on both devices have a 120Hz refresh rate. The screens of foldable smartphones are less bright than standard panels. They are also very susceptible to fingerprints. Clamshell displays get dirty quickly and require frequent cleaning.

Power

Galaxy Z Fold 3. Fold works on one of the newest chips, but not on a gaming one marked with a +.  The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor and 12GB of RAM. There are two options for built-in memory – 256 GB in the standard version and 512 GB in the advanced.

The device is powerful – because of the large display, such a phone should be suitable for games. The Fold can run a wide variety of applications at the same time, including videos and games.

Galaxy Z Flip 3. The fold on the screen is not conspicuous. The Flip is powered by the same chip as the Fold – Snapdragon 888. But it only has 8GB of RAM. For a smartphone, options are available with 128 GB or 256 GB of internal memory. The gadget is quick to use. Applications start very quickly and there are no problems with use.

Now Fold and Flip is a successfully developed scheme for creating foldable smartphones, applied in practice. It becomes clear that Samsung is not abandoning the idea of clamshell phones and is trying to improve them. Choosing the best of the two is quite difficult: yes, they are similar, but the purpose of the devices, prices, and functions are different.
