What type of tent to choose?

The type of tent is the main selection parameter. If you have definitely decided on the purpose of your future trip, then choosing a tent will be simple and easy. There are options for winter fishing, camping, mountain hiking, and others. To understand which tent is right for you, let’s look at the pros and cons of each type.

Camping tent.  Ideal for family holidays or outings with friends. The tent is big enough, so it won’t fit in a tourist backpack, it’s better not to go camping with it. Often camping tents have a vestibule, windows, you can change the volume of the tent itself.

Trekking tent. With such a tent they go hiking, it is designed for hiking along hiking trails. Trekking tents are characterized by the large volume, good capacity, they are not characterized by strength and durability, they are made of unreliable materials, and therefore they will last only one or two seasons.

Beach tents. From the name, it is clear that the tent is designed for the beach. You can take it with you to water bodies where there are no trees nearby to hide from the hot sun and not get burned. In addition, in a beach tent, you can take a nap for a couple of hours or hide from the wind, which can cover all things and food with sand.

How to choose the right tent?

To buy a durable, stable tent that will protect you from bad weather and easily withstand temperature changes, you should familiarize yourself with the main selection criteria: construction type, tent material, number of layers, waterproof.

Construction type. Tents are attached to the frame in two ways:

  • The tent is suspended from a frame located under an awning. First, you have to set up a tent, then pull the awning over the frame. When you install such a structure in rainy weather, you need to do everything quickly, otherwise, everything inside will get wet. But when it’s hot, you cannot install an awning.
  • The frame is installed outside the tent: the tent must be hung from the awning. Rainy or windy weather will not interfere with the collection of such a structure, since it is stable. First install the awning, then the inside.

Waterproof tent. Water-resistance is measured in the height of the water column in millimeters and ranges from 500 to 10,000 mm of water. These complex terms are hard to understand, so just remember the waterproof ratings:

  • More than 3000 mm – maximum water resistance for the most unforeseen rains.
  • 2,000 – 3,000 mm – medium moisture resistance, can withstand light rain, but will not survive a downpour or hail.
  • 500 – 2,000 mm – poor water resistance, suitable for relaxing only on a warm, not rainy day.

What material should the tent be made from? The fabric of the product affects its strength, durability, and water resistance. For sewing tents, polyester or polyamide fabrics are used. Polyamide tents are strong, light, but stretch from moisture and lose strength from the sun. Tents made of polyester fabrics are not afraid of rain and UV rays, but they are more expensive.
