The Main Differences Between Gels, Creams, Tonics, Masks
When buying and using cosmetics, you have often noticed that different means have different consistencies. But it is not always clear how, for example, a tonic differs from a gel. Moreover, both the cream and the mask can have the same effect – how to determine which is the best to use to achieve the desired goal? Therefore, in this article, made by our beauty team we decided to describe the main types of cosmetic means.
In total, there are several types of cosmetics by consistency: gel, milk, cream, tonic, mask, scrub, peeling. Let’s figure out each of them.
Facial gel
Jelly-like product without added fat. May foam during application. The gel allows you to moisturize the skin and creates a moisture-retaining film on the skin’s surface. The gel is not recommended for very sensitive skin, as it creates a tightening sensation. In winter, the gel works worse, since the low temperature does not allow it to fully fulfill its functions.
Cream with emulsion
Contains oil and water. After the cream with the emulsion is applied to the skin, the water begins to evaporate, and the oil remains on the skin in the form of a thin film. It, in turn, prevents moisture from evaporating from the surface of the skin – due to this, the skin becomes moisturized and soft. Emulsion creams are suitable for normal, dry, and sensitive skin. But they are not at all suitable for oily skin, since the film created by the oil can retain the sebum secreted by the glands on the surface, which, since it cannot escape, clogs back into the pores.
Skin Milk
The composition is similar to creams with an emulsion. The difference is that the composition contains more liquid components based on water, so the milk for the skin has a better moisturizing effect. Most often it is suitable for any type of skin, including oily, as it does not create a protective film from the oil.
Skin toners and lotions
These are special products for toning the skin. Toners are used immediately after the skin cleansing (makeup remover) process to restore the pH level of the skin and remove makeup and dirt from the face. Toners also help retain moisture on the skin’s surface, moisturizing and softening the epidermis.
Face masks
Masks are a kind of application method in which the active substance is applied to the skin of the face or body. The mask can be liquid – in this case, it must be applied with a special brush or with your hands. Also, the mask can be one-piece – then it is a material with slits for the eyes, nose, and lips and is put on the face. There are various masks for their intended purpose: face cleansing masks, anti-inflammatory masks, moisturizing masks, anti-wrinkle and age-related masks, and many more.
Peelings for facial skin
Peels are products that are redesigned to gently exfoliate the upper stratum corneum from the surface of the skin. During the procedure, active agents exfoliate dead cells, releasing new and young ones. As a result, the skin becomes more youthful. In place of old cells, new ones quickly appear. Therefore, in fact, during the procedure, old cells are replaced by young ones.
