Red Antifreeze. What Do You Need to Know About It?

Red antifreeze is a coolant that belongs to a certain class. It has a modern composition, high performance and is suitable for many different cars. In terms of its technical parameters, it differs significantly from green and blue antifreeze, since it has a completely different class and composition of chemical components. Therefore, it is better to pay attention first of all to the label and the composition of the liquid, and then to its colour.

Main peculiarities of red antifreeze?

In terms of their manufacturing technology, such coolants are more advanced and sophisticated, since they do not have the disadvantages inherent in traditional blue antifreeze. This newer generation refrigerant is compatible with copper and aluminium radiators, has a positive effect on the operation of the entire cooling system, has a long service life and a high boiling point.

Composition. The basis of red antifreeze, as in the production of other coolants, is ethylene glycol. Its freezing point is not very high – only 13 degrees. Therefore, to increase this threshold, it is diluted with water. Depending on the manufacturer, you need to look at whether to add water to the antifreeze or if it is already diluted in advance. But since a pure concentrate cannot be poured into the expansion tank, most brands take care of this already at the stage of manufacturing the coolant. Unlike blue and green antifreeze, which are made on a silicate base and with the addition of other chemicals, the red liquid is carboxylate, not hybrid. This means that no additional additives are used in it. The composition does not contain such familiar additives as nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, amines, borates.

Properties. Red antifreeze contains special corrosion inhibitors of an organic nature, which do not work constantly but only in certain cases. A special feature of red antifreeze is that it does not create a film in the cooling system. During its circulation, it undergoes adsorption. The coolant accumulates and concentrates in certain places, choosing the centres of occurrence and spread of corrosion. There, it creates a thin protective layer that prevents rust from spreading further. Such a point effect distinguishes it favourably from the previous generation antifreeze. Over time, it does not crumble, so it can be changed less often. And due to the fact that the area of the surfaces covered with an additional layer of antifreeze is small, the heat transfer remains the same.

Peculiarities. Despite the absence of silicates and many chemical additives in the composition, the red coolant has high lubricating characteristics. It does not decompose for a long time, so its shelf life is up to 5 years. The boiling point and freezing point of this antifreeze is high, so the car will not overheat even when travelling long distances. It prevents the engine from exceeding the operating temperature but does not boil, ensuring the stable functioning of the cooling system. The downside of such a liquid is that it does not perform corrosion prevention, but only fights against the spread of already existing foci. Therefore, such antifreeze is well suited for car owners who have already encountered the problem of rust in the cooling system.
