Make Your Bedroom Cosy with the Right Table Lamp

Make Your Bedroom Cosy with the Right Table Lamp

A bedside table lamp has two purposes: to provide enough light for comfortable reading and relaxation in the bedroom, and at the same time to fit perfectly into the interior. The choice can be difficult: you need to decide on the height of the luminaire and the size of its shade; choose the right style; calculate the brightness and find the price. Fortunately, there are basic design and selection rules that make the task easier. Let’s find them out.

How many lamps do you need?

Typically, one lamp is needed for one person. But for a spacious bedroom or king-size bed, two will provide optimal light balance and symmetry. It is important to remember that even two lamps cannot provide sufficient illumination for the entire room. Complete them with a chandelier, recessed lights or a floor lamp.

Main parameters

Width. A common mistake when decorating a bedroom is choosing the wrong size for a table lamp. It may be too small or too large for a bedside table. Consider the “principle of balance”: the wider the mattress, the wider the bedside table; the wider the bedside table, the wider the lamp on it. As a rough rule of thumb, a bedside table is one-third to two-thirds of a mattress, and a bedside lamp is one-third the width of a bedside table when measured at the widest point of the light fixture.

Height. The choice of height is especially important for those who like to read before bedtime. For reading, the light should not shine directly into the eyes and fall from above, creating a shadow. The bedside table is often the same height as the bed (or within a few centimetres). In this case, the rule comes into force – we choose a lamp of the same height as the bedside table, giving an additional 5-8 cm. For example: for a bedside table with a height of 60 centimetres, a table lamp with a height of 65-68 centimetres is suitable.

The location of the wall-mounted switch is an important aspect. To turn it on and off, it should be enough to reach out without getting out of bed. The ideal distance of the switch is equal to the length of the arm, averaging 55 to 70 centimetres.

Styles of bedroom lamps

It can be absolutely anything! The most important thing is that the table lamp matches the overall interior design and emphasizes its individuality. What will suit different styles?

High-tech: glass and chrome-plated laconic models, without additional decor.

Classics: fabric lampshades, abundant decor in the form of curls and pendants.

Country: wood frame, solidity and lampshade from natural materials.

Designer: unusual shapes, unusual materials, bold colours.

Oriental: juicy shades, luxurious shiny elements and rounded shapes.

When choosing a table lamp for a bedroom, the main thing to remember is that whatever you choose the main thing is that you like it!
