Peculiarities of Krakow

Krakow is not only the administrative centre of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, but also an economic, tourist and dynamically developing scientific centre. Nevertheless, the unique architectural ensembles create the magical atmosphere that Krakow possesses. It is in Krakow that more than a quarter of Polish works of art are collected, which makes the former capital of Poland the European capital of culture. Many festivals, performances, and concerts take place in this city every year, which attracts people of culture, art, and tourists. Moreover, Krakow is an extremely green city with numerous green spaces, parks, and recreation complexes.

Climate

Krakow is located in a temperate zone with variable weather. In summer, the weather is dry and warm, and the temperature reaches a maximum of +25 in the daytime. At night, the thermometer can drop to +11 degrees. For sightseeing trips, the best time is late spring-early summer, when the flow of tourists is not so great. During the winter months, the city is covered with snow, and the air temperature is kept around 0 degrees.

For the maximum convenience of tourists, all the sights of the city are combined into the following thematic routes: Royal Route, Academic Route, and Skalka. But the main attraction of Krakow is the Wawel Royal Castle.

Let’s start with the Royal Route, which is the road along which the kings entered the city, so it was along this road that the most famous people built their houses.

Let’s move on to the next stage – the Academic Route, along which all the main ancient universities of Krakow are located.

Finally, let’s talk about Skalka, a walk along which will lead to the area called Kazimierz, which is an old Jewish city located near Krakow. It must be said that it was in the area called Skalka that, according to legend, there was a Proto-Slavic shrine, on the site of which the Romanesque church of St. Michael the Archangel. Later, a Gothic church was located here. The pilgrimage to the Skalka for repentance was part of the coronation ceremony for all Polish kings.

And, of course, one cannot fail to mention the main attraction of Krakow – the Wawel Royal Castle, located on the mountain, and which is a whole complex of ancient castle buildings. It should be noted that even in the 1st millennium AD Wawel was the prince’s residence, besides, it was here that the most significant state institutions were located: treasury, mint, courts, the main apartment of the prince’s squad. Today, the interior of the castle is made in the Renaissance style, while the former royal palace houses the National Art Collection.
