FitBit Charge 5 Fitness Tracker. It’s Main Parameters and Performance

Fitbit products have their own proponents who prefer them over more mainstream brands. Google clearly saw the potential and decided to acquire Fitbit in early 2021. Today we will take a look at the fifth generation of the Fitbit Charge 5 sports bracelet.

Fitbit Charge 5 is an intermediate solution between simple heart rate bracelets and versatile smart watches. The Charge 5 features a built-in GPS and an AMOLED color display for the first time in the series.

Fitbit Charge 5 design

Design is one of the undeniable advantages of the Fitbit Charge 5, at least in terms of comfort and appearance. The bracelet is light – it weighs 30 grams with a shorter strap and 32 grams with a longer one, and also has a curved shape without protruding parts. The plastic strip is connected to the metal shell, forming a single compact unit with no visible gap. The plastic strap is of high quality, with a satin finish. The Fitbit Charge 5 fits snugly around your hand and won’t snag on clothing, and its thinner body than smartwatches means less hand sweating during exercise.

The Fitbit Charge 5 is waterproof up to 50 meters. Replacing the straps is very fast and convenient – one of the easiest but it requires special straps for this model. The device comes with straps in two sizes. One is suitable for wrists with a circumference of 130 to 170 mm, and the other is suitable for wrists with a circumference of 170 to 210 mm.

Fitbit Charge 5 display

The Fitbit Charge 5 is the first group in the Charge series to feature an AMOLED color display. The screen has a diagonal of 1.04 inches, it is bright and high-contrast, easy to read even in strong sunlight. The screen has only three brightness settings – dark, normal, and maximum brightness. In the settings, you can enable the “Always on screen” option, i.e. AOD. After the screen normally goes blank, the display dims but is still easy to read. A big plus is the ability to turn on the always glowing screen, but only during training. There is also an option to lock the screen before diving in to avoid unwanted interactions.

Fitbit Charge 5 operation and features

The Fitbit Charge 5 is gesture-based. Double-tap wakes the screen from sleep mode and from anywhere on the system goes to the home screen, so it functions like a home button. Swiping from the left edge functions as a back button and returns to the previous screen.

The default main watch face displays the date and time and one of the selected options, which can be scrolled with a single touch. These are steps, plus, calories burned, distance traveled, and active effort in minutes. Moving the main screen to the sides gives us access to “apps” (as the manufacturer classifies them): notifications, exercises, alarms, timers, and EDA measurements, that is, stress. We can go to these functions in reverse order by scrolling from the left side.

Since the Fitbit Charge 5 is designed primarily for sports, an important function of the bracelet is built-in GPS, which allows you not to drain your smartphone battery during a workout and go to workouts without it. The user can determine in the settings whether the bracelet will use its GPS built into the phone (if we have one) or dynamically decide which one is more convenient and accessible at the moment.

Battery performance

The manufacturer promises that the Fitbit Charge 5 will last 7 days on battery power. If you do not train, but only monitor your heart rate and sleep, this result is easily achievable. However, if we use the bracelet intensively for training with GPS, then it will work for 5 days.
