Dig In Into Shakespeare Drama by Visiting Verona
Verona is the city of Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet, so many attractions here are associated with the names of famous romantic heroes. If you try hard, then, of course, you can run through the main places in one day.
In order to get deeper into the atmosphere of the city, to get acquainted with its culture and architecture, it is better to stay here for a few days: take a calm walk and feel the local flavours as much as possible. Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore
The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore should be visited first, it is an important historical monument of the city and a religious place. It is here that the relics of St. Zeno of Verona are kept. The basilica was built in the 10th century: its facade and interior have been preserved almost unchanged.
On weekends, a flea market and fairs are held near the basilica, where you can buy interesting memorabilia.
Promenade Regaste San Zeno
After visiting the basilica, take a walk along the picturesque streets and the Regaste San Zeno promenade, which stretches along the Adige River. You will have wonderful views of the river and Verona. Medieval houses, a cosy atmosphere, an abundance of cafes – it’s time to have a cup of coffee and take beautiful pictures as a keepsake.
Castelvecchio Museum
Following the Regaste San Zeno, you will come to the Castelvecchio castle. You will not pass by it: the building with seven watchtowers is built of red brick and has a rather ascetic appearance.
Castelvecchio was built in the 14th century during the time of the Scaligers and is currently under the protection of UNESCO. Today, the castle houses the City Museum, which presents an extensive medieval collection of paintings, sculptures, and weapons.
Ponte di Castelvecchio
To the left of Castelvecchio is the famous Scaliger Bridge (Ponte Scaligero), which connects the banks of the Adige River. Built-in the 14th century, the bridge was the only link between the castle and the city. It looks very powerful: at the top, the bridge is decorated with jagged elements, and there are three arches and 2 pentagonal towers. The structure was significantly destroyed during the Second World War, but then it was completely restored according to the surviving drawings.
Porta Borsari
Moving towards the city centre, pay attention to another attraction of Verona – Porta Borsari. This monument was built in the 1st century: then the arch served as a military outpost. At present, the Porta Brosari arch harmoniously fits into the architecture of the city and is an important historical site, although it has not been completely preserved.

Piazza delle Erbe
Of course, a tour of the city is impossible to imagine without a visit to the main square. In Verona, this is Piazza delle Erbe, which is located in a historically significant place where the antique forum used to be located.
