Children Allergy Awareness. What Do You Need to Know?

Children Allergy Awareness. What Do You Need to Know?

Because of allergies, children can suffer from insomnia (night cough, stuffy nose), and they can risk health and life due to bee stings. Also, food is one of the most common causes of allergies and life-threatening severe shock reactions (anaphylaxis).

The sooner you identify what’s causing your allergy symptoms, the sooner you can fight to get your child back on track.

Is allergy a disease?

Not really. This is a protective reaction of the immune system to an allergen (what causes an allergy). And for the second time.

Having tried something new for the first time, the body analyzes it, but the second and subsequent times it gives a reaction. The scale of allergic reactions is striking: it can reach the point that a reaction develops in children to food that was in the same refrigerator as the product that actually provoked the allergy.

When to suspect an allergy in children?

The doctor observing the child should ask the parents if he or she has strong “negative” reactions to something. For example:

  • Runny nose or sneezing.
  • Cough.
  • Respiratory failure.
  • Skin rash or itching.
  • Digestive problems (nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea).

Food allergens have a high false positive rate, and even if you test positive for tomatoes and your child doesn’t pee on tomatoes, they’re fine, it will only confuse you and lead to unnecessary dietary restrictions.

When can a child be tested for allergies?

Allergies can develop at any, absolutely any age. And vice versa, sometimes as they grow older, allergic reactions in children disappear. Moms like to say “outgrown.” Many parents believe that children must reach a certain age before allergies develop and tests can be done.

So, it all depends on what exactly worries you: if you yourself are allergic, or you see that the child is not breathing well, he has a reaction to some product or substance, then it is justified to test him.

If you just like to get tested and you yourself have the results of an allergy panel, where it turned out that you are allergic to alpaca wool or tropical plants, then it is better to spend your money on something else. For example, a new toy.

Is it possible to understand without a doctor that a child is allergic?

Difficult, but possible. If there is severe itching, this may be a symptom of an allergy. The easiest way to notice this is after eating: the child’s cheeks turned red, the skin became dry, and began to itch. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other causes of itching around the world. In addition, allergic manifestations disappear very quickly, a couple of hours is enough, or even minutes (therefore, after vaccinations, they are asked not to leave the clinic immediately), and not in a week.

If you suspect that your child may have an allergy, don’t sit still and try to figure out the cause. Know that the sooner you identify what is actually causing your symptoms, the sooner you can create a treatment plan to address them. And return to normal life.
