Change Winter Mood to the Romantic One By Visiting Santorini

Santorini is a small archipelago, a ring of five volcanic islands in the Aegean Sea. It includes Thirassia, Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, Aspronisi, and Santorini, also known as Thira. The archipelago is part of the Greek Cyclades, which consist of 56 large and small islands. It is customary to talk about Santorini in a superlative degree: the architecture here is of stunning beauty, magnificent, incomparable landscapes, wonderful opportunities for an unforgettable vacation. The most famous pictures of the island with numerous snow-white houses located on multi-level terraces on the cliffside are taken in Tire, the most popular resort on the island.

Why is Santorini so popular with tourists? Why is it so attractive? Let’s try to figure it out.

Climate

Santorini is an island with a typical Mediterranean climate. Summer here is hot and long, in the winter months it can be dank and rainy, a strong gusty wind blows. But there is no talk of frost, the temperature does not drop below +13 ° C even at night. The high holiday season lasts here from May to October, although tourists have been arriving since March. In summer, in July and August, it can be quite hot here, the air temperature can exceed +30 ° С, and the water in the sea warms up to +25 ° С. However, the summer heat is easily tolerated here due to the low humidity.

What to visit in Santorini?

Of course, an island with such a rich history boasts many attractions and monuments. You should definitely visit the Museum of Prehistoric Times in Fira, which contains a huge number of the most valuable archaeological finds from all over the island. Not far from the city is the main church of Panagia Bishop in Santorini, which dates back to the 11th century. At Cape Akrotiri, you can see the ruins of one of the oldest settlements on the shores of the Aegean Sea. Also noteworthy are the unique art gallery in Argyros Kanava, organized in the premises of one of the oldest wineries, and the Tomato Museum in Vlyhad, and the cultural centre of Santoseum.

Beaches

Getting to know Santorini would not be complete without visiting the local beaches. There are many of them, but the most popular are the beaches of Kamari and Perissa. The first, located 10 km from Tira, is famous for its colourful mixture of black volcanic sand and small dark pebbles. This beach stretches for 8 km along the coast, it is well equipped, and along with it, there is a whole strip of small bars, taverns, and hotels. There are always a lot of tourists here.

Perissa beach lies 15 km south of the capital, it stretches for almost 7 km. The coastal strip here is covered with black and dark grey sand, which heats up strongly in the sun (you need special shoes), and the bottom is rocky in the water. The sea near the coast is surprisingly clean and transparent, the beach is protected from the wind by the rock of Mesa Vuno, so there are almost no waves here.
