Bordeaux. It’s Not Only About the Wine

Bordeaux. It’s Not Only About the Wine

Wine from Bordeaux has become more famous than the city itself: this is not surprising, about 660 million bottles are produced here a year. But this does not mean at all that there is nothing to see in Bordeaux. The aristocracy, Gothic architecture, numerous vineyards and theatres create an ideal atmosphere for all sophisticated lovers of Europe. Keep reading to see the other side of this beautiful city.

Water Mirror square

It is located in front of the majestic exchange complex built in the 18th century. The main highlight of the square is the unique Miroir d’eau fountain (Water Mirror). The bottom line is that through special mechanisms in granite slabs, water comes to the surface, making the area really look like a smooth mirror reflecting ancient buildings.

Wine Museum La Cite du Vin

It is called the “Louvre of Wine” and for good reason, because the City of Wine is a modern cultural complex dedicated to winemaking. There are a bunch of interactive exhibition areas where you can learn about each stage of winemaking, your own cinema, regular lectures and tastings. You can even take a boat ride through the museum park, feeling like real wine merchants on a galley. The ticket will cost around €25.

Grand Theater of Bordeaux

It is one of the three most beautiful opera houses in Europe along with the Versailles and Turin operas. The architecture of the Enlightenment is breathtaking: marvellous statues of muses and goddesses are located on the columns of the building. The National Opera and Ballet of Bordeaux perform here.

City Park

In the northern part of Bordeaux, there is an old city park. What a pleasure to walk along the shady alleys and lacy bridges, enjoying nature. And then run into the Botanical Gardens or the Museum of Natural History of Bordeaux, which is located in the park. You can even ride a carousel that looks like a vintage fairground attraction.

Winery of Château Pape-Clement

This is one of the best wineries in France, which is located just 8 km from Bordeaux. It has a long, interesting history: the winery began to work already in the XIII century. In one of the castles, there is a cosy and comfortable hotel with all amenities.

Basilica of Saint Michael

The basilica was erected in the 16th century. Its towers resemble numerous needles and arrows pointing to the sky. This is one of the highest churches in France: it is accompanied by a bell tower 114 meters long, from where a breathtaking view of Bordeaux opens.

Museum of Modern Art

The museum is located in the austere interiors of a former warehouse of colonial goods. This creates an enigmatic contrast, as more than 1,000 works of contemporary art are on display here. Almost 200 avant-garde masters of the 20th and 21st centuries have contributed to the collection, which is considered one of the largest in France.

Submarine Base Bordeaux

In the 40s of the 20th century, the Royal Italian Navy located the BETASOM submarine base in Bordeaux. It was from here that they started the famous Battle of the Atlantic from 1940 to 1943. Today, this facility has been turned into a cultural centre hosting contemporary art exhibitions and entertainment events.

Creative space “Darwin”

If after a walk through the old city you lack parties and youth, then welcome to Darwin. This is a skate park where street art reigns supreme. Graffiti, workshops, co-working. Here you can enjoy a mug of local beer and walk around the numerous cafes and bars. The atmosphere is fire.

Classical architecture, rich cultural life, divine wine and cheeses, picturesque nature – Bordeaux combines all the best that is in France. Just get your ticket on the EasyJet website and see it all yourself.
